Breath work is a key component of mindfulness practice. We need to understand that our breath is a bridge between our mind and our body. We breathe all day, every day, usually without thinking about it. In mindful breathing, we take a moment to pay attention to our inhalations and exhalations. Mindful attention to the breath helps us learn to notice when thoughts and feelings arise, and thereby lessen the times our thoughts draw us into stories and mind-wandering. Concentrating on our breath brings us back to the present moment. The less we worry about what will happen, or ruminate about what has happened, the closer we move toward a healthy mind and a calm, grounded body.
