With this crazy election nearing the end, I’m sure we could all use a moment to stop and spend a few moments without thought. I was taught this breathing technique years ago as a way to focus on the breath when practicing mindful sitting. While I do use this at times when I sit, I actually use this more during the day when I’m feeling super stressed and need a few moments to myself. I even practice this with my students when my class gets a bit wonky and needs to reset.
Practice this by sitting or lying comfortably. Close your eyes and imagine an infinity symbol (or if working with kids, have them visualize the number 8 lying on its side). Notice the breath and as you fall into a natural rhythm, imagine your inhales and exhales riding around and around on the curves of the infinity symbol.
As the election results pour in, you may want to let others in on this gem as a way to temporarily escape from the political frenzy. Just breathe…
