I once read that it takes seven compliments to even out one put-down. That statement has always stuck with me, and because of that, I try to include lessons in gratitude every time I work with a group of students. Being grateful means noticing and appreciating things we have that can't necessarily be purchased, or recognizing the positive actions of others.
This picture shows one of our summer camp kids making a gratitude chain. This sweet face has enjoyed watching it grow by adding additional links each day for all she is thankful for. Teaching gratitude to children can help them understand that even on the crumbiest of days, we can usually find something to be thankful for.
